Prenatal Massage

Self care for the mother to be

Reduce pain and discomfort the natural way

Picture
Prenatal massage and perinatal massage are also commonly referred to as Pregnancy massage. Perinatal refers to any time “around the birth.” This includes before, during and after the baby is born. Therapists certified in pregnancy massage have been trained in the proper positioning and techniques that are to be used to safeguard the health of the baby and the mother.
Massage assists in remedying many of the common discomforts experienced during pregnancy: muscular discomforts, lower-back pain, upper-back pain, headaches, leg cramps, sciatica, stiffness, tension and knots, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, heartburn and acid reflux, fatigue, varicose veins, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, edema of the lower extremities, neck pain, interscapular pain, sacroiliac and hip joint pain and constipation.
Massage soothes and relaxes the nervous system by releasing endorphins into the mother’s body. As a result, the expectant mother feels more relaxed and at ease, and will also sleep more easily and more deeply. Improved sleep provides quality rest that is expecially needed to help cope with the additional stress on the mothers body.

Massage supports the return of blood to the heart and increases blood flow to the uterus and placenta. With the enormous demands placed on the circulatory system during pregnancy, blood volume may increase up to 60 percent compared to pre-pregnancy levels. As pregnancy progresses and the uterus enlarges and presses deep into the pelvic bowl, venous return to the heart is hampered. Massage helps to support the circulatory systems ability to manage increased blood volume.

How does pre-natal massage make a difference?

Prenatal massage is therapeutic bodywork that focuses on the special needs of the mother-to-be as her body goes through the dramatic changes of pregnancy. It enhances the function of muscles and joints, improves circulation and general body tone, and relieves mental and physical fatigue. The gentle, noninvasive approach of prenatal massage can ease discomfort associated with pregnancy, help the mother-to-be prepare for labor and give her nurturing emotional support.

My wife and I went for our first massage at Cascadia Center For Massage today, and have already booked another appointment! My wife had a prenatal massage with Cathleen and I had a deep tissue massage with Penny, we both were very impressed. From the professionalism to the specific expertise (deep tissue & prenatal), we both commented that these are practitioners with a great deal of experience. I highly recommend you give them a try!

Cathleen and the whole center is such an amazing Heath resource for Bellingham. I recently heard Cathleen speak about Prenatal massage and the experience and expertise she shared gives me the confidence to refer patients to her practice. Nothing but great things to say.
