Improved flexibility. Faster recovery. Fewer injuries.
A sports massage is usually focused on a specific area of the body to improve physical performance, minimize the potential for injury and address chronic conditions due to overexertion or strain. The massage therapist uses a variety of techniques that may include positional release, myofascial release, and stretches to improve/increase range of motion at the joints. Pre-event massage sessions are vigorous and designed to “rev-up” and prepare for exertion during the sport activity. Post-event massage sessions will focus on painful areas due to strains. The massage therapist will work to elongate muscle tissue, which will encourage the release of toxins. Hot or cold therapy may be incorporated into the treatment to flush the tissue and reduce pain. A sports massage may be 60 or 90 minutes long.
Massage improves muscle elasticity. A massage for tight muscles can help pre event. Before an event, muscles can often be tight due to an increase in training to prepare for the event. Muscle tightness restricts movements and makes injuries such as muscle strains, pulls and tears more likely to occur. A massage aims to decrease muscle tightness by increasing muscle flexibility and elasticity through rising the temperature of muscle fibers and tissues. Increasing flexibility and elasticity of a muscle allows full range of movement with no restriction or pain. Allowing full range of movement decreases chances of injury during the event and therefore helps a person to prepare beforehand. |
Massage helps after a sporting event such as a 10k run, a football match or a cycle race. Sports massage also helps after workouts or gym classes. It is a beneficial treatment to help muscles recover, prevent injuries and prepare the body for future exercise. A sports massage will help reduce muscle spasms and metabolic build-up of waste products that occur during exercise. The massage helps to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). DOMS can be caused by a number of factors. DOMS can be the result of minor muscle or connective tissue damage, local muscle spasm that reduces blood flow or a build-up of waste products from energy production. A sports massage helps treat DOMS by reducing muscle spasm, flushing out waste products and increasing blood flow to an area. Increased blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to an area to assist the repair of any damaged tissues..

Prevention is better than cure - a program of regular massage therapy reduces the incidence of injury. Sports massage is an effective tool to integrate into a training program to help the body recover from the stresses of exercise and facilitates the rebuilding phase of conditioning. Sports massage helps improve blood and lymph circulation, muscle relaxation and general relaxation and also helps to flush out waste products and improve cell nutrition. The effects of sports massage adds up to the relief of soreness, stiffness, increased flexibility and less chance for future injury.

Will sports massage really help?
Sports massage has many of the same benefits as stretching, as it helps increase blood flow to the muscles, stimulates nerve endings and breaks down scar tissue. It also encourages tissue healing by working to re-align damaged fibers, which ultimately improves muscular function. It is the quality of rest that is the key to effective training, of which massage can greatly improve the effectiveness. Regular treatment enables more training at a higher level and with greater safety.

Pete, Mountain Biker I have been going to Cascadia Center for Massage for a number of years now. The therapists that work there are incredibly skilled, pleasant, and obviously passionate about helping others. Brandon, KayakerI have had the pleasure of getting massage from two of the therapists at Cascadia and I am so pleased with the service I have had from both therapists. Cascadia is a warm, calm and inviting atmosphere that immediately put me at ease. I was able to discuss the issues I was dealing with and have those addressed but also learned what I could be doing to help those issues. Cascadia's therapists are highly trained and explained how muscles in my body interacted. I confidently recommend Cascadia!
